E-Signature for Contractors
Write the estimate on paper, snap a photo and text it to the homeowner. They sign before you leave the driveway, and the change order is signed before the extra work starts.
Documents you can send
The paper that protects your job.
Use the forms you already have. A clear photo of a paper estimate works as well as a PDF.
- Estimates and quotes, approved with a signature and a date.
- Change orders, signed before the extra work and the extra cost.
- Home improvement contracts, with the scope, price and payment schedule.
- Subcontractor agreements, plus a certificate of insurance attached with an "ask for a document" field.
- Job completion sign-offs, so the customer confirms the work is done.
- Lien waivers, where your state allows them to be signed electronically.
How it works
Signed before you leave the job site.
Photograph the paper estimate or scan it with your phone camera, or upload a PDF from your estimating software.
Tap where the customer signs. Add a date, initials or a checkbox like "I approve this change order."
Send it by text or WhatsApp. They sign with a finger, and you both get the signed PDF.
Why MultiDocs
Works from a truck, a roof or a basement.
Homeowners open a link and sign with a finger or a mouse. Nothing to download, no password to remember.
Send the link by text message, WhatsApp or email, or copy it and paste it anywhere. Email reminders go out every two days, up to three times.
Send the same document, like a schedule change or a safety acknowledgement, to your whole crew or every customer on a job: up to 20 on the free plan, up to 500 on Team.
The last page records the date and time, where the link was sent, IP address, device, a unique signer code and the SHA-256 fingerprint of the file. Anyone can check it at /verify.
Good to know
Two rules worth knowing.
The three-day right to cancel. If you sign a contract at the customer's home for $25 or more, the FTC Cooling-Off Rule usually gives the customer three business days to cancel, and you must give them a written cancellation notice (16 CFR Part 429). Many states add their own home improvement rules. Include the notice in the document you send.
Lien notices are different. Preliminary notices and notices of intent to lien often must be delivered by certified mail or another method set by state law. E-signature is great for estimates and change orders; for lien notices, follow your state's delivery rules.
This is general information, not legal advice. For your specific situation, ask a lawyer licensed in your state.

Questions
Contractor e-signature questions.
Can I get a paper estimate signed electronically?
Yes. Take a photo of the paper estimate or scan it with your phone camera, add a signature box and text it to the customer. They sign on their phone.
Is a change order signed by text legally binding?
Generally, yes. Under the ESIGN Act and state UETA laws, a signature can't be denied legal effect just because it is electronic. Make sure the change order states the work and the price clearly.
Does the homeowner need to download an app?
No. They open the link in their phone browser and sign with a finger. No account, no password.
Can my office manager and I share one account?
Yes. The Team plan is $25 a month for unlimited users on a shared dashboard, so everyone sees what is pending and signed.
Can I collect a deposit with MultiDocs?
No. MultiDocs doesn't collect payments. Take the deposit the way you usually do and note it in the contract.
What if the customer has no email?
Send the link by text message or WhatsApp, or copy it and share it any way you like.
