How the text is sent

Only text people who gave you their number and expect the document.

To be clear about how this works: the message goes out from your own phone, through your normal Messages or WhatsApp app. We prepare it, with the signing link, and your phone sends it. That has three advantages:

  • They recognize the sender. It comes from your number, not an unknown short code, so it doesn't look like spam.
  • They can reply to you with questions, in the same conversation.
  • No per-message fee from us. Your carrier's normal texting plan applies, which for most US plans means unlimited texts.

If you're sending from a computer, you can copy the link and text it from your phone, or use WhatsApp Web.

What the signer sees

A short text from you with a link. They tap it and the document opens in their phone's browser: large text, one field at a time, one button. They read it, fill in what you asked, sign with a finger and get their own copy. No account, no password, no app to download. Most people are done in a couple of minutes.

No extra cost for SMS or WhatsApp

Several e-signature services charge extra for text delivery. DocuSign, for example, sells SMS and WhatsApp delivery as a paid add-on on top of its per-user plans (as of November 2026; see DocuSign's pricing page). With MultiDocs, texting and WhatsApp are included on every plan, including the free one.

When text works better than email

  • Customers on the job site. Contractors and repair shops getting an estimate approved before starting. See contractors.
  • Drivers and field crews who rarely check email. See trucking.
  • Parents signing a permission slip on the way to work. See schools.
  • Clients at a salon or studio signing a consent form before the appointment. See salons and tattoo studios.
  • Tenants signing a lease renewal or move-in checklist. See landlords.

Proof when you sign by text

A signature collected by text is just as strong as one collected by email. The certificate of completion on the last page records the phone number the personal link was sent to, the IP address, device and browser, date and time, a unique signer code and the SHA-256 fingerprint of the document. Anyone can check the PDF at /verify. Under the federal ESIGN Act, a signature can't be denied legal effect just because it's electronic (15 U.S.C. § 7001(a)); how the link was delivered doesn't change that. More in are electronic signatures legally binding?

One thing to know: automatic reminders go by email. If you only have a phone number, check the status page and send a quick follow-up text yourself if someone hasn't signed.

FAQs

Can I send a document for signature by text message?

Yes. Upload the document, mark where they sign, enter their mobile number and choose SMS. Your phone opens a text with the signing link, ready to send.

No. The link opens in the phone's browser and they sign with a finger.

Can I send by text to several people at once?

Yes, up to 20 signers per document. To send the same document to a whole group, each with their own copy, use bulk send.
